Looking for a Job in the Public Sector? - Better your Chances by Going Green
If you are a graduate or have been made redundant, your chances of employment might seem slim. In the current economic downturn, the outlook for job hunters is certainly bleak, especially for young people. Over the summer 46,000 of 18-24 year olds found it particularly difficult to jump onto the employment ladder.
In addition, while it may be true that public sector jobs within structures such as the NHS and the civil service have yet to really feel the blow of the economic downturn, tightening government budgets will mean drastic job cuts eventually. In June, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development predicted that there would be a reduction of 35,000 jobs across the public sector between 2011 and 2014. Job security along with pensions packages, could represent only the benefits of better times.
It is for this reason that the government is turning to the critical problem of climate change and carbon emissions to begin countering the effects of the floundering economy. For instance, the government is currently planning large-scale green initiatives, from energy security policies, to infrastructure investment, to the wholesale expansion of low-carbon emitting industries. These initiatives will not only help to sustain the environment; they will also create employment opportunities.
The government’s evolving green initiatives will provide a wide range of new positions, in both the public and private sectors, as well as in new sectors like wind farms. Green jobs will encompass not simply roles such as environmental researchers and awareness advocates, but positions as varied as engineers, architects, financiers, plumbers, project managers and retailers. By choosing a green career now, it is hoped that anxious job seekers will increasingly be presented with a wealth of new options.
