Estimator Traffic Solutions

The Project Estimator function is involved in Tender and Bid activity on behalf of Operations providing accurate and timely information, and presented in a professional manner. The job holder should have a good working knowledge of most manufacturing processes and should also be capable of high quality and sustained output, show flexibility when assigned to the various tasks production and related disciplines.

What are my responsibilities?

  • Supply works cost estimates.
  • Obtain material costs from sub-contractors
  • Contributes to cost reduction exercises
  • Obtain existing purchase and labour cost data.
  • Derive costings using experience
  • To improve estimating process.
  • You will be expected to participate fully in group meetings and section meetings.
  • You will also communicate within the whole of STCL and external customers as well as external suppliers.
  • Should integrate well as a member of a team, take collective responsibility for the quality of the teams output, report and communicate any problems arising and contribute towards the solution of any such problems.
  • The job holder should also be capable of keeping up to date with new technology, equipment and practice.

What do I need to qualify for the role?

  • You must have demonstrable estimating experience, within a manufacturing environment.
  • You must have electronic and mechanical engineering know-how to be able to understand drawings and communicate with others internally at a technical level
  • You will have excellent telephone skills.
  • You will be encouraged to review the role you have and suggest new ways of approaching matters and then implementing your plans
  • The role will require you to develop good working relationships with both colleagues in Operations and throughout the Business.
  • You will need to listen to people, understand their issues and handle complex and technical matters.
  • You will be expected to work with your manager and colleagues in understanding the departments objectives and deadlines and planning your work in order to meet these priorities.
  • Generally you will be dealing with fairly routine questions around issues where there are clearly laid down policies and procedures.
  • This position has no responsibility for managing or leading a team, however guidance will be required from you to manufacturing staff and engineers on production related issues.
  • This position works with key data concerning cost information. The post holder needs to be well organised and able to work methodically and accurately under pressure.
  • The role holder is responsible for ensuring that they work safely and they are aware of the possible impact of their actions on the colleagues safety and well-being.
  • The position will liaise with external suppliers on cost related issues.
  • The position has responsibility for ensuring a financial awareness of cost information but no direct budgetary responsibility.
  • Experience of a relevant estimating package would be an advantage.
  • Experience of Microsoft office skills using Windows for Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of a relevant MMS would be beneficial.
  • The role holder will be expected to work on several pieces of work in the same period.
  • A detailed knowledge of production processes and practices are essential, experience in electromechanical production including knowledge of material and process constraints preferable.

  • The job holder should also be capable of keeping up to date with new technology, equipment and practice.
