Job Summary:

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a multidisciplinary practice of landscape architects, ecologists and arboriculturalist and play a key role in supporting the Ecology team leader in the future development of their Kent based Ecology team. On joining the team as an EPS licenced Principal Ecologist, you will provide crucial support to junior team members and play an important role in managing top clients and delivering key projects.

Not only will you have the opportunity to take the technical lead on important and technically complex projects, but you will also be providing a diverse range of ecological services, on a range of projects. Work will range from sensitive historical sites to large scale multi-phased mixed development projects and will often involve collaboration with the two other specialist teams (landscape and arboriculture) to deliver varied client requirements.

Responsibilities / Accountabilities:

As a Principal Ecologist your brief will include;

  • Taking the lead on important and technically complex projects, including EIA associated projects.

  • Supporting the Head of Ecology in managing and programming ecology works associated with the office
  • Managing the team in the absence of the Head of Ecology
  • Mentoring and training other members of the ecology team
  • Liaising with clients and working to develop long-lasting relationships
  • Coordinating and undertaking species-specific ecology surveys
  • Composing ecology fee proposals
  • Attending client and design team meetings
  • Co-ordinating and leading on ecological works associated with medium to large scale projects
  • Designing protected species mitigation strategies
  • Project management, report writing and delivery
  • Making licence applications as required


  • A relevant degree
  • Previous experience in ecological consultancy
  • Experience in successful project management from inception to completion
  • Full CIEEM membership
  • Licenced bat or great crested newt worker with experience in surveying for other protected species groups
  • Thorough knowledge of wildlife legislation and planning policy
  • Full driving licence and access to a car


  • Experience in preparing and implementing European Protected Species Mitigation licences
  • Experience in Ecological Impact Assessments and Habitat Regulations Assessments
  • Masters or PhD in ecology related subject
