Planning Strategy published for NI

28 September by

A planning blueprint for Northern Ireland has been published by Environment Minister Mark H Durkan.

It pulls together 20 existing planning polices into a single Strategic Planning Policy Statement (SPPS).

The report says 'No' to fracking, unless there was sufficient and robust evidence of its safety on all environmental impacts, and confirms a "town centres first" approach to retailing.

In the introduction to the report Mr Durkan states; "I recognise that the planning system can, and should, do more to unlock development potential, support job creation and aid economic recovery, but not at the expense of compromising on environmental standards."

Overall, Mr Durkan said, this "key document" would "help ensure that the planning system delivers for all, now and for future generations".
