The HS2 extension from Leeds to Scotland through Newcastle could be critical to the region according to a report published by HS2 East. The rail link, it is reported, could add an estimated £540m to the North East economy, creating new jobs and giving Newcastle greater connectivity.
The cost of extending the line to Newcastle and then north to Scotland is estimated to cost at £27 billion.
Council leaders in England and Scotland have now called on the Government to press ahead with the eastern leg of the scheme.
Newcastle City Council leader Nick Forbes said: “For Newcastle, as for so much of the UK, HS2 is more than just a new line. It’s an economic development project for the nation, and one which has the potential to be transformational to businesses in this city and across the North East.
Building HS2 is expected to create nearly 25,000 jobs, including 2,000 apprenticeships.
