The States of Massachusetts, New York, and Rhode Island alone have the potential for offshore wind deployment of between 4,000 to 8,000 megawatts by 2030 and the creation of up to 36,000 jobs according to recent study by global renewable energy consultants BVG Associates Limited, entitled; US Job Creation in Offshore Wind Report 2017
This opportunity has sparked wide interest from oil and gas service companies, the solar renewable energy sector and other adjacent market players wishing to transition into this $multi-billion industry.
Reasons why the industry should be excited about the new US Offshore Wind develoments:
There are 28 projects totalling over 24 gigawatts in the US offshore wind pipeline, with $million contracts to be won.
4-8 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity expected to be built in the Northeast by 2030.
A high market scenario of 8 GW by 2030 would yield a peak of over 16,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) baseline jobs in the U.S. in 2028.
The jobs most likely to be performed in the U.S. include project development and management, supply and installation of electrical substations and subsea cable, wind farm operation and maintenance.
Solar and wind professionals have transferable skills, especially the SCADA, Controls engineers, financial modellers - so there will be various opportunities to transit across these industries.
BOEM, the Northeast Wind States and ALL major offshore wind developers are encouraging US-based O&G players to diversify into the offshore wind sector and support the construction of major projects.
For Example, Maryland will need around 125 turbine installations. Each is going to use a jacket similar to fixed O&G platforms.
