What We’re Seeing in Environmental Consultancy Pay for 2026

The environmental consultancy market continues to evolve at pace - and with it, expectations around salary, benefits, and career progression.

Allen & York’s latest Salary Insights for Environmental Consultancy (published March 2026) highlights a clear trend: while salary bands remain relatively structured by experience, the competition for talent is intensifying - and flexibility is becoming key.

Across core disciplines such as ecology and environmental consulting, entry-level salaries typically begin around £23,000–£28,000, rising to £35,000–£50,000 at senior level, and exceeding £75,000+ at Director level.

However, these ranges are increasingly being stretched for candidates with in-demand skills, particularly in areas such as Biodiversity Net Gain, EIA, ESG reporting, and specialist technical disciplines.

One of the most important insights from the report is that salary alone is no longer the deciding factor. Candidates are placing equal - if not greater - emphasis on:

  • Project quality and impact

  • Career development pathways

  • Flexible working and wellbeing

  • Organisational purpose and values

At the same time, the ecology market remains especially competitive, with talent described as “slow moving” - meaning that attracting candidates often requires a compelling overall offer, not just an increase in base salary.

For employers, this presents both a challenge and an opportunity. Simply inflating salaries or offering inflated job titles can create longer-term issues around expectations and retention. Instead, the most successful organisations are taking a more strategic approach - hiring at the right level, offering clear progression, and building attractive, well-rounded packages.

As the sector continues to mature, the message is clear: winning talent in environmental consultancy requires a balance of competitive pay, meaningful work, and long-term career value.

At Allen & York, we use these insights to support our clients in benchmarking effectively and securing the talent they need to deliver increasingly complex environmental projects.
