EMS, Permitting and Compliance

Many organisations recognise that improving their environmental performance is not just a matter of compliance. Increasingly, stakeholders and customers expect organisations to demonstrate their commitment to managing and minimising their environmental impacts.

An EMS is a systematic approach to managing an organisation’s impacts on the environment. It provides a framework through which the organisation's environmental performance can be controlled and improved.

Sites operating under the Environmental Permitting regime are required to have an Environmental Management System that: minimises the risk of pollution; ensures the site has competent persons and appropriate resources; provides ongoing records of compliance.  Regulatory bodies need to increasingly scrutinise sites to ensure these are in place and state that even where  a site has ISO14001, it does not guarantee permit compliance.
