Associate Director/ Director Designate - Strategic Planning and Research Unit

DLP Planning Ltd are seeking to recruit an Associate Director to the Company's Strategic Planning Research Unit (SPRU) with, ideally, up to 10 years' experience gained from either a public or private sector background.

The position will be based in our central Bristol Office but will work nationally within the growing SPRU team providing advice and guidance to all DLP offices and clients across the country. As an Associate Director one of the key roles of the post will be the promotion of the services offered by SPRU to existing and new clients mainly in the south west and south midlands.

DLP Planning Ltd is part of the DLP Consulting Group and was formed in 1991 as an independent planning and development consultancy. Having grown consistently over the years, the Group now comprises of Town (i) Town Planning; (ii) Architecture/Master Planning/Urban Design; and (iii) Transportation and Infrastructure Design teams, serving a wide variety of clients and operating from offices in London Bedford, Nottingham Sheffield, Leeds Milton Keynes, Rugby, Bristol and Cardiff.

The Strategic Planning Research Unit (SPRU), is a specialist team within the Group and provides clients with support and assistance in the following areas:

  • Housing demand and need including Strategic Housing Market Assessments
  • Local Affordable Housing Needs Surveys
  • Housing Supply including 5-year housing land supply assessments
  • Employment land demand and supply
  • Retail assessments and retail impact statements
  • Sustainability Appraisal
  • Green Belt Reviews
  • Public Sector commissions
  • Attendance at Local Plan Hearings
  • Expert Witness at Planning Inquiries
  • Bespoke research commissions

SPRU also offers advice to Local Planning Authorities and other public/community organisations with respect to the production of development plans, including Neighbourhood Plans and can include assisting in drafting sound policies, negotiating the legal framework as well as appearing at the Plan Examination.

Job purpose:

The position is based in our Bristol office.

To assist in providing a specialist planning and research service to both new and existing clients, and help expand the business. This is an important role within an established and expanding part of the nationwide planning team and will require the post-holder to be able to manage a wide and complex workload, provide assistance and support to other members of the Unit and the wider Planning Team and to manage and develop a client base.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities:

1. The Associate Director will help to manage the SPRU workload;

2. To assist in general management and reporting responsibilities;

3. To manage and develop the SPRU client base;

4. To work with the various other Group offices and services to help develop and expand the Group as a whole.

Person profile:

The successful candidate will be client focussed and an ability to define and deliver planning and development projects to time and to cost. The candidate will be highly numerate and be able to write and present reports/evidence in a clear, precise and logical manner. The candidate will be IT literate with good skills in word processing, spreadsheets, database management and the Internet as well as being able to work flexibly on a wide range of projects.

The successful candidate should be confident in representing the SPRU team and presenting their findings both to clients and in more formal settings such as examinations and appeals. The ability to work independently as well as taking clear instructions will be an important attribute for this role. A full driving license is essential.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to manage competing time demands and prioritise tasks and work as part of a team or on a solo basis as and when required.

This post is permanent and will commence in immediately. This post would suit a planner with an interest and talent for strategic planning wishing to further their career by working on a diverse range of projects across the UK.
