Ecological Modeller

Location: Cambridge

Working for a leading marine environmental consultancy, you will support marine, coastal and onshore development, management and planning activities. They are part of the a Group of companies, an international, multidisciplinary consultancy company with over 2,100 employees located in offices in Europe, Asia and Africa providing impartial consultancy in a variety of fields such as construction and infrastructure, public utilities, environmental and natural resources, climate change and energy, planning, and development consulting.

Purpose: To ensure consistently delivers accurate and targeted statistical and modelling outputs that inform their portfolio of ecological assessment and monitoring work Direct & Indirect Reports: Reporting directly to Marine Environment and Ecology Team Leaders and indirectly to the Senior Management Team Scope:

Provide ecological modelling outputs and working with the consultancy clients on a wide variety of data sets including ornithological surveys for offshore wind.

You will take a lead role in the design, production and delivery of all ecological modelling requirements.

Working familiarity with the application of Population Viability Analysis (PVA), specifically the construction of stochastic age-structured population models

An understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of PVA in its application to inform decision making for conservation and/ or development consent.

Ability to critically evaluate ecological datasets collected by third parties, suggest and apply processing that investigates the annual and seasonal variability of species important for impact assessment purposes.

Working knowledge of techniques such as linear models (GLM or GLMM), Generalized Estimating Equations ("GEEs")

An aptitude for disseminating detailed statistical information to a wide variety of audiences  Engagement with relevant stakeholders (e.g. UK conservation bodies: MSS, NE, RSPB, SNH, JNCC, CEFAS) to agree scope and applicability of modelling outputs.

A familiarity with, or a willingness to develop skills in, the modelling of underwater noise as related to marine fauna including fish and marine mammals

Support and advise colleagues in relation to the statistical analysis of ecological and environmental data as required Stakeholders:

To support Clients (including developers of offshore wind farms and other marine and coastal projects)  Contractors and sub-contractors, including surveyors

External stakeholders (e.g. UK conservation bodies: MSS, NE, RSPB, SNH, JNCC, CEFAS) Key Accountabilities:  Development and maintenance of their expertise in ecological modelling for renewable and other industry project work.

Leadership of discrete work packages involving aspects of modelling and/or statistical techniques  Identification of Group needs to deliver current and future statistical challenges in project work PTO Person Profile


Degree in a relevant environmental or biological science (relevant post-graduate qualification an advantage)

Track record of ecological modelling through industry projects and/or peer reviewed papers Skills:  Be conversant in R  Experienced biostatistician  Capable of communicating verbally and non-verbally with technical and non-technical audiences Attributes.
