Health Impact Assessment (HIA) Consultant - London

My client is seeking an experienced Health Impact Assessment Consultant to work within their impact assessment team. You will be delivering and managing HIA projects and helping to grow the HIA business. Working with a variety of technical disciplines on a wide range of different types of development. Ideally you will have experience across environmental impact assessment (EIA), strategic environmental assessment (SEA), health impact assessment (HIA), integrated impact assessment (IIA), environmental and social due diligence (ESDD), preliminary environmental appraisals, feasibility studies and contribution to guidance documents.

You will deliver HIAs for projects at all levels, including major national infrastructure, transport and urban development projects, policies, strategies and plans. Clients will include private developers, public sector authorities and other organisations. You will be working in a multi-disciplinary environment alongside other environmental, planning, engineering and urban design specialists, and will work closely with related disciplines to integrate health across environmental consultancy services.

Your remit will be to undertake technical work and assist with proposal preparation and marketing activities. You will be responsible for:

  • Delivering HIA projects and writing HIA reports / Environmental Statement Health chapters
  • Strategic assessment of health effects for Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and Integrated Impact Assessment (IIA) of plans and policies
  • Preparing health inputs to EIA screening and scoping reports
  • Project management activities including programming and budget control
  • Interfacing with multi-disciplinary project teams
  • Advice on mitigation and enhancement measures to improve health outcomes
  • Health literature reviews
  • Communicating and liaising with clients
  • Assisting with HIA team marketing
  • Preparing bids and presentations

Requirements and skills

Experience in one or more of the following technical areas is required:

  • Managing and/or delivering HIAs within the planning, design and construction context
  • Healthy urban planning, health public policy
  • Environmental impact assessment (EIA)
  • Policy assessment (Integrated Impact Assessment, Strategic Environmental Assessment, Sustainability Appraisal)
  • Public and stakeholder engagement within the planning, design and construction context

The individual will require the following skills and attributes:

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and be comfortable working on multiple tasks and projects at any one time
  • Have a proven ability to successfully work as part of a team and direct more junior staff as appropriate
  • Be able to work under own initiative
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Must have excellent report writing skills
  • Experience of working within a commercial environment, including client liaison, programme and time management, quality assurance and within budgets
  • Have a strong focus on meeting and exceeding client requirements and a commitment to technical quality and excellence


  • Education to degree level, preferably a Masters degree
  • Member of an appropriate institute. This could include the Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment (IEMA) or equivalent and Chartered Environmentalist, and/or Royal Society of Public Health, Faculty of Public Health, UK etc.
