Mine Closure Consultant (Dar es Salaam)

Job description

Shape the Future of Sustainable Mining: Mine Closure Consultant

Location: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (Hybrid - 3 Office days a week)

Are you an environmental professional passionate about leaving a lasting, positive legacy? We are seeking a technically skilled Mine Closure Consultant to join a premier environmental and social consultancy dedicated to responsible resource development across Africa.

In this role, you won't just be closing sites; you will be designing sustainable land-use solutions that benefit clients, communities, and the environment for generations to come.

The Opportunity:

Joining a multidisciplinary team of specialists, you will lead the charge in developing practical and regulatory-compliant closure strategies for a diverse portfolio of mining projects in Tanzania and the broader Eastern Africa region.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Strategic Planning: Developing comprehensive mine closure strategies, policies, and future land-use plans for post-mining environments.
  • Liability Management: Conducting practical closure liability assessments aligned with international best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Regulatory Liaison: Coordinating directly with the National Mine Closure Committee (NMCC) and the NEMC to secure approvals and manage environmental protection bonds.
  • Technical Execution: Preparing technical inputs for decommissioning plans, reviewing closure cost estimates, and monitoring rehabilitation activities throughout the mine life cycle.
  • Client Advisory: Acting as a trusted technical guide, providing expert advice on closure planning and implementation while building lasting client relationships.

What you bring to the table

We are looking for a solution-oriented professional who excels in dynamic project environments and possesses strong analytical capabilities.

  • Experience: 3-5 years of experience in a similar consulting role, specifically managing or supporting mine closure-related projects.
  • Education: A Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Geology, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proven ability to estimate closure liabilities, interpret engineering designs, and utilize GIS tools (ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.).
  • Regulatory Knowledge: A deep understanding of Tanzanian mine closure legislation and international industry standards.
  • Versatility: Willingness to conduct fieldwork in remote and challenging locations and a valid driver's license and passport.
  • Legal Status: You must be a Tanzanian citizen or hold valid legal authorization to work in Tanzania.

Why Join This Team?

  • Professional Growth: Gain exposure to international best practices and industry-leading projects within a respected African consultancy.
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work alongside top-tier specialists in environmental and social consulting.
  • Diverse Portfolio: Get the chance to work across different mining commodities and non-mining sectors like petroleum and infrastructure.
