Principal Planning & Environmental Consultant

About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to lead complex, multi-disciplinary projects, influence strategic decision-making, and contribute to high-profile planning and environmental work. My client is looking for an experienced and motivated Principal Planning & Environmental Consultant to join their growing team. You'll play a key role in delivering expert planning advice, managing projects, mentoring colleagues, and shaping the future direction of our Planning Department.



What You'll Be Doing
As a senior member of the team, you will:
Project Leadership & Technical Delivery

  • Lead and contribute to Planning applications, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), and mitigation strategies
  • Review policies, legislation, and technical reports to support complex project assessments
  • Assess development risks and liabilities, including due diligence and insurance work
  • Prepare and oversee high-quality technical reports, legal documents, and expert submissions
  • Support and contribute to environmental permit applications

Project & Client Management

  • Manage multiple projects to time and budget, including financial oversight and reporting
  • Liaise with clients, consultants, and regulatory authorities at both operational and strategic levels
  • Lead and coordinate sub-consultants and multidisciplinary teams
  • Provide clear, strategic advice and recommendations to clients

Team Leadership & Development

  • Mentor and support junior team members, including training and performance reviews
  • Review and quality-check technical work produced by colleagues
  • Line management responsibilities including appraisals, development plans, and workload coordination

Strategy & Business Contribution

  • Contribute to the company's growth through client engagement and business development
  • Represent the company at industry events and with professional bodies


Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

  • Professional membership of RTPI or CIWM.
  • Planning and EIA experience is essential.
  • Previous consultancy or private sector experience is desirable.
  • Experience in minerals and waste is desirable.
  • Previous line management experience is desirable.
  • Ability to supervise a range of practical works and/or others undertaking field works.
  • High standards of written work and overseeing work prepared by colleagues.
  • Experience of implementing Quality Management Systems throughout the project.
  • Experience of project management and financial control including preparing, working to and amending budgets.
  • Good project management, administrative, communication and organisational skills.
  • UK Driving Licence.

Desirable

  • Consultancy or private sector experience
  • Experience in minerals and waste sectors
  • Previous line management experience


Key Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • High attention to detail and quality of written work
  • Financial and budget management experience
  • Knowledge of planning legislation and environmental guidance
  • Experience working within Quality Management Systems
