Job Description - Principal Town Planner

£40,000 - £50,000

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

Planning Work

1. Preparation of written fee proposals in conjunction with Practice Manager or other senior members of staff/Partner only if required
2. Planning research online and at LPA offices
3. Undertaking site visits and preparing written and visual record
4. Preparing written site appraisals
5. Provision of written and verbal planning advice
6. Preparation, submission and management of applications including planning, enforcement, listed building consent, certificate of lawfulness and prior approval notifications
7. Preparation of planning, design & access, heritage and other related statements
8. Preparation of written Local Plan representations for site promotion and appearing as an expert witness as appropriate level Public Inquiries
9. Submitting and managing appeals by Written Representations, Hearings and appropriate level Public Inquiries including preparation of Appeal Statements/Evidence and appearing as an expert witness at public inquiries
10. Acting as part of the development team on larger projects
11. Dealing directly with clients for all proposals
12. Speaking on behalf of clients at Planning Committee meetings
Business Development
1. Achieving self-sufficiency in planning work
2. Speaking at Practice seminars
3. Participation in business development initiatives
4. Guiding junior staff in professional and personal development
Any other tasks commensurate with the post

Key Qualities and Competencies Required

1. Chartered Planner/RTPI Member
2. Full driving licence
3. Good understanding and ability in the full range of planning work
4. Good commercial understanding of development projects
5. Good IT literacy and understanding/ implementation of Practice IT/administration procedures
6. Self-motivated
7. Well organised
8. Good time management
9. Good level of accuracy
10. Good attention to detail
11. Good team player
12. Good communicator
13. Good commercial understanding of planning consultancy business
14. Delegation of some work to junior staff
