Senior Ecologist - Winchester

An exciting and unusual opportunity has arisen for a passionate and driven Senior Ecologist to join a consultancy based in Winchester. Reporting directly to the Lead Ecologist you'll be providing technical ecological advice on a variety of projects, to ensure that objectives for sustainable development and biodiversity are met.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide specialist advice to ensure that decisions are based on sound ecological principles
  • Find innovative solutions for reducing impact and enhancing the environment
  • Assessment and advice for EIA and HRA
  • Assist in development and preparation of policies with local frameworks and biodiversity initiatives
  • Provide support and advice at planning appeals, inquiries and hearings
  • Undertake surveys and assessments; and give advice on protected species
  • Ensure developments remain compliant with ecological legislation

Who you are:

Essential Requirements:

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant area, or ability and experience to operate at degree level
  • Ability to manage own workload and contribute effectively to the team
  • Communication skills with a high standard of written and oral presentation
  • Some previous post graduate relevant experience
  • Good knowledge and understanding of ecology (including specifically habitat management and restoration, survey methodologies and mitigation strategies
  • Good understanding of the principles of SEA, EIA and HRA and the application of the supporting legislation
  • Good understanding of the principles and application of planning policies and environmental legislation
  • Holds or is eligible to hold bat, dormouse or great crested newt survey licences
  • Project management skills
  • IT skills - including GIS, MS Word and Access and bat call analysis software
  • Current driving license, and ability to meet the travel requirements of the role


Desirable Requirements:

  • Full Member of CIEEM, or eligible for full membership
  • Knowledge/experience of Phase one habitat surveys and protected species surveys
  • Has recently obtained Natural England Development License
  • Experience of the preparation of impact assessments and mitigation strategies
