Due to the continued growth and further investment in the Bristol office, our client are seeking to recruit x2 Associate Directors with a minimum of seven years' experience in either the public or private sectors. The positions represent key appointments for the growth of the office and offer an opportunity to progress to Director level for the right candidate.

General Job purposes:

Associate Directors are tasked with work commensurate to their experience and abilities and are required to lead on projects and manage their own workload as well as supporting the Directors. They enjoy the support of junior members of the professional planning team in completing projects as may be required and also have a high level of client contact and business development responsibility. Timely and thorough attention to projects and to our wide diversity of clients is the key to the effective completion of work undertaken by the team.

Role 1: Associate Director - Private Focus

The first role requires a candidate with a strong development management background (either public or private) to support the ongoing workload of applications, appeals and site representations. The office currently works for a number of national, regional and local house builders/developers, as well as land owners. Business development, project management of large applications and a network of private connections is advantageous, but not essential. Key roles:

  1. Responsible for private sector business development and managing projects/clients. Associate Directors report accordingly to the office Director whilst developing their own client base/winning projects for which will have a large measure of responsibility;

  1. Manage the workload of junior staff members who will assist them in the wide variety of projects in which they will become involved

  1. Undertake marketing and business development activities (existing network of contacts would be beneficial). Experience in preparing and presenting evidence to hearings, inquiries or examinations in public would be an advantage.

Role 2: Associate Director - Public Focus

Candidates will be expected to be able to lead on the winning and project management of work of development plan policy and evidence work, such as housing, employment, green belt and gypsy and traveller evidence and other Local Plan policy drafting, production/management and critical friend support. They must therefore be able analyse and problem solve, advocate solutions verbally and in writing and also convey ideas clearly to their team. They should, whilst working in a team environment have the determination and ability to work also on their own initiative to win work via competitive tenders and direct invitations from LPA. Key roles:

  1. Responsible for public sector tenders and managing projects/clients. Associate Directors report accordingly to the office Director whilst developing their own project portfolio which they are responsible;
  1. Manage projects and workloads of junior staff members who will assist them in the wide variety of projects in which they will become involved.
  1. Undertake marketing and business development activities for public work. Experience of representing LPA at Local Plan (Other DPD) examination would be an advantage.

The role offers the scope for a diverse workload and whilst the focus of work for this role will be public sector policy and evidence, the role also provides good scope to undertake planning application work for local developers on small scale private developments to diversify candidates' skill sets.

Person profile

The successful candidates will be able to manage competing demands on their time and prioritise tasks for themselves and others. The roles supplement a small dynamic team of planning professionals, so good interpersonal skills, can do attitude and ability to work in a small team is essential. A key aspect is consideration of client expectations and the need to provide excellent planning advice/strategy whist conveying/managing risks. Candidate will have a flexible attitude towards working hours, will be self-motivated and will have a good team spirit. Some experience in the management of junior staff would be a benefit.

Candidates will be self-assured and will be able to develop good working relationships and the confidence of clients. They will enjoy the prospect of developing their own client base and making a real contribution to the prosperity of the office, Company and of themselves. The successful candidates will be numerate with the ability to write English in a clear and concise manner. They will be IT literate with good skills in word processing, spreadsheets, database management and the Internet. They will be organised and punctual. A full driving licence is essential. Membership of the RTPI preferable, borderline essential.
