Job Purpose:

Responsible to the Network Manager for managing the safe, effective operation of the distribution network, whilst maintaining an overview of network security and availability. To provide a rapid response to faults, minimising customer minutes lost and providing timely and accurate information to customers affected by faults.

Network Control operates 24 hours a day and monitors & operates the Network throughout this period, liaising with other companies and generators' control rooms. Pattern working in both full and part shift roles is a requirement of the role. Candidates must be prepared to work a full-shift pattern if required as a condition of the appointment.

Dimensions:

  • Network - ensuring the safe, secure and efficient operation of the network for the relevant UK Power Networks licence area.
  • Customer - rapid restoration of customer supplies following a fault interruption and provision of accurate information on job progress.
  • Liaison with NGT and major generators and other network operators as required

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Managing and controlling a section of the distribution network using SCADA and other network information systems.
  • Providing rapid restoration of supply in fault situations
  • Providing technical advice to field operators and Operations Centre staff.
  • Ensuring that all field staff are aware of the state of the network and sanction the issue of safety documents.
  • Responsibilities for monitoring a designated section of the network to ensure it is operating within defined parameters.
  • Preparing reports on faults and other network operations.
  • Complying with IIP fault reporting requirements.
  • Complying with the Grid and Distribution Codes and all relevant Safety Rules, Instructions and Codes of Practice.
  • Liaising with staff within other processes regarding operational matters.
  • Maintaining awareness of customer requirements and provision of relevant information.
  • Working flexibly across the Control team and Network Operations to ensure that the current and future needs of the customer and business are met.
  • Communicating effectively with other members within the Network Operations team and building strong working relationships with other teams across the Business.
  • Assisting in the effective development of processes/procedures. Challenging existing practices and processes and striving for continuous improvement.

Nature and Scope:

A Control Engineer is responsible, for the duration of their shift, for the safe and effective operation of the distribution system. They will have full responsibility for part of the network for the duration of their shift, and will provide a safe and rapid response to faults in addition to the management of planned operations, whilst complying with the Grid & Distribution Codes and all relevant Safety Rules, Instructions and Codes of Practice.

You will also be expected to discharge all of the Principal Accountabilities above.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience:

Band F -

  • Craft Background
  • Minimum of C&G 2339, formally 232, required
  • Power industry / Electrical background
  • HV experience preferred although limited LV experience would be considered
  • LV network knowledge of overhead / underground / plant

 

Band E -

  • UKPN or Electrical industry background
  • HV Field or Control experience
  • Minimum of ONC or equivalent
  • HV network knowledge of overhead / underground / plant

Band D -

  • UKPN or Electrical industry background
  • HV/EHV Field or Control experience
  • Minimum of HNC or equivalent
  • HV/EHV network knowledge of overhead / underground / plant

Should you not currently possess the full range of essential skills, qualifications and competencies listed above, there may be an opportunity for further training to equip the successful candidate appropriately. If the successful candidate does not possess all relevant competencies for the core grade, it will be appropriate to appoint at a lower grade until they have developed the required competencies.
