Design Manager - Water


Role Summary

  • Technical deliverables are produced within the required timescales
  • Technical costs are properly managed within the fee curves
  • Technical change is tightly controlled and that scope is properly managed.
  • Technical resources are managed effectively by working with the Programme Area Manager and Integrated Projects Leader to coordinate design resource
  • Design teams adopt and make effective use of standard products. Relevant stakeholders are involved in design (particularly constructors, supply chain and ops)
  • Anglian Water technical requirements and standards are adhered to consistently
  • Required quality checking/approval procedures are carried out.
  • Develop simple, effective technical delivery processes to improve the production of design deliverables to time/cost/quality
  • Ensure consistency with the other programme areas where appropriate
  • Work with the Engineering Manager, other PDMs, Enabling Manager, Product Development Manager & CAD Manager to provide the leadership that will make the technical delivery within the Alliance industry-leading
  • Mentor the development of the design team
  • Report key issues on technical delivery to the Engineering Manager before they become problems. Work with the Engineering Manager to remove blockers & resolve key issues. Provide a short report for the Engineering Manager to present to the AMT as a monthly update on technical delivery
  • Be responsible for CR&S areas of Sustainability in Design and Energy & Carbon, report progress & issues to the CR&S Manager. Work collaboratively with Shared Services teams on best practice in all CR&S areas while providing input & feedback on finding the best solutions to meet the CR&S targets. Provide Project Delivery Managers & Production Managers with guidelines & leadership on sustainability in design, ensure they provide input on design areas where they can maximise benefits in delivering sustainable assets


  • Masters in Civil Engineering
  • Recognised Project Management Qualification


  • You will need to have significant experience in the water industry
  • Ability to work on own initiative and seek assistance when required
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload to ensure that timescales are met
  • Good problem solving/contingency planning skills with ability to find quick, innovative and practical solutions
