Our Client is a leading Environmental Consultancy with over 20 years' experience successfully helping our clients achieve their development ambitions.

The Role:

Our clients Ecology Team has grown from strength to strength in recent years and now comprises seventeen staff located across all four regions. The Principal Ecologist will join a busy and dynamic team, and will be based in Glasgow. The successful applicant will be responsible for designing, managing and delivering a range of projects across the UK, although it is expected that the role will focus primarily on projects in Scotland.

For development related projects, the Principal Ecologist will be responsible for consultation, field survey work, reporting, Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA), writing Ecology chapters for Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Reports, habitat and species management planning, and conducting Habitats Regulations Appraisals (HRAs).

They will offer the opportunity to be involved in research projects for governments and public bodies. The Principal Ecologist will be expected to support projects out with their core specialisms and offer advice and the benefit of their experience to the wider Ecology Team and the business generally.

About You:

You will be a professional ecologist with 10 years' experience and preferably have a consultancy background. You will be an excellent communicator with advanced skills in client and regulator liaison and have a track-record of winning and delivering projects. It is essential that candidates have UK and Scottish experience.

You will have a degree or equivalent in ecology or a related subject. An MSc or PhD in an ecological subject is desirable.

Based on the CIEEM Competency Framework, the ideal candidate will be accomplished in most of the following themes:

  • Habitat/species survey design, planning and fieldwork;
  • Species identification, handling and evaluation;
  • Habitat identification and evaluation;
  • Design and preparation of habitat/species management enhancement plans or projects;
  • Outcome monitoring, data management and reporting;
  • Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA) etc.;
  • Ecological assessment including Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA), and Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA);
  • Scientific method, design and implementation;
  • Analysis of data;
  • Interpretation and evidence-based reporting;
  • Managing quality;
  • Managing and evaluating projects; and
  • Recruiting and developing people.


We are looking for candidates with a technical specialism in protected species (such as bats), marine ecology or botany, and with considerable experience in completing EcIA's and HRA's. A valid UK driving licence is essential for this role.

Advantageous, but non-essential, experience and skills include:

  • Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW);
  • GIS;
  • Mentoring;
  • Business development and marketing.
