Purpose of role:

To manage the design, construction, commissioning and putting to work of contracts up to a combined value of £15M,  ensuring they are completed in the most efficient manner to the specification, within the time required and within the tender estimate without risk to  the health and safety of all concerned while ensuring good customer satisfaction.


Project Management:

  • Ensure the project specific Project Management Plan is developed and regularly updated throughout the lifecycle of the project.
  • Issue of the Project Execution Plan (PXP) for the project is developed at the commencement of the project and ensure subsequent compliance is maintained throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Ensuring works procedures are compliant with the design, project management and quality plans
  • Ensure high productivity and efficiency through effective control and utilisation of the contract work force and it’s resources, operating within the appropriate Safety Management system as defined by HS (G) 65 and the Board of Directors
    • Understanding and implementing the Quality, Safety and Environmental Policies and Targets
    • Have detailed working knowledge and experience of project management practices from scheme conception through to end user acceptance
    • Deliver the project in accordance with the Balfour Beatty “Project Management Minimum Expectations”(Appendix A) and MWH “Manage the Project” principles..
    • Ensure, as role of the Project Manager under the NEC form of contract, that “Risk” is managed effectively under NEC contract methodologies and APM principles. Escalate any “issues” where appropriate.


  • Ensuring, in conjunction with the Design Manager, that an adequate Technical, Safety and Environmental review is carried out for each project to ensure successful delivery
  • Ensure constructability and planning reviews are carried out before any detailed design commences
  • Encourage and integrate innovation and cost effective working methods.
  • Ensure change is managed effectively on the project and follow company quality management processes for the management of change on a project and follow TQ processes and Compensation Event processes under the contract.


  • Ensure that appropriately detailed risk assessments and method statements are prepared, in place and approved prior to commencement of activities
  • Encourage and integrate innovation and cost effective working methods.
  • Manage Subcontractors and Suppliers on the project where appropriate and ensure the relevant NEC form of subcontract is used and complied with.
  • Maintain regular contact with Site Mangers providing support and advice to ensure they are aware of project and NEC requirements for their project, and discuss any future potential problems or issues that may arise.


  • Project Management experience
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in a construction related discipline.
  • APMP or equivalent
  • Hold H&S certification: either NEBOSH, SMSTS, CSCS, ISOH  as appropriate.
  • Good  computer IT Skills (various packages such as Word, Excel, Cemar)
  • Excellent oral and written communicator with the ability to work in close partnership with clients and end users.
  • Must be delivery driven with the ability to set targets and manage and motivate multi-disciplinary teams to deliver to time, cost and quality objectives.  
  • Experience in Network project delivery
  • Strategic, operational, technical and management skills
  • Working knowledge of CDM and construction Health & Safety.
  • Awareness of NEC contract - hold NEC3 ECC Project Manager Accreditation
