Will a 4-Day Week Replace the Traditional 9-5?
A 4-day week – same hours and pay, but a day to spare! Sounds ideal, right? But is the reality as good as it sounds?
Many people crave extra time for family, friends, hobbies, and even a bit of life admin. So, the news of the Labour Government wanting to enhance workers’ rights to request flexible working – including a 4-day week – will be welcomed by many!
Some workers find that a 4-day week helps save on childcare costs and enhances their well-being and work-life balance. Plus, many argue it boosts productivity!
However, several high-profile companies have trialled this model with mixed results. For example, Morrisons recently paused their 4-day week for head office staff due to feedback. Staff had to work some Saturdays, leading to dissatisfaction.
Small businesses might struggle with a 4-day week too, as it could affect morale and productivity among colleagues covering that “extra” day.
The Four Day Week Campaign is gaining traction, advocating for the same pay but fewer hours, claiming it will enhance productivity and improve work-life balance.
Flexible working remains a hot topic, with some notable brands asking employees to return to the office for five days a week. At Allen & York, we’ve found that candidates are still seeking roles that offer the flexibility of hybrid working, showing reluctance to return to the office full-time. 🏢
Candidates value flexibility, so setting expectations from the start can only enhance your hiring process!
