It’s a question most of us ask ourselves at some point in our careers. If you’re fortunate, the answer might be a confident yes. But for many, it’s not quite that simple.
You might be in a role that pays well, with a supportive team around you, so you stay. You tell yourself it’s fine for now and that you’ll move on when the time is right. But as time passes, it becomes easy to settle. You begin to wonder whether you’re still marketable or if a new opportunity is even realistic.
Looking for a new job can feel daunting, especially if it’s been a while. But staying in a role that no longer challenges or fulfils you isn’t the answer. It could be time to take control of your next step.
Here are five signs to consider a change:
1. You feel invisible
You’re not getting feedback or recognition. Others with less experience seem to be progressing while you remain in the same place. If your career has stalled with no sign of development, it’s worth exploring new opportunities.
2. There’s no challenge left
You’ve stopped learning. That buzz you used to get from leading a successful project or gaining a new skill is gone. Of course, not every day will be inspiring, but there should be room for growth. If your employer isn’t supporting your development, ask yourself why you’re staying.
3. Colleagues are moving on
A wave of leaving cards and farewell drinks could be a sign of shifting priorities in your team or company. If others are finding better opportunities, perhaps you can too.
4. You’ve lost motivation
You’ve stuck it out, maybe for years, but deep down you know it’s time to move on. Recognising that feeling is often the first step towards change
5. Recruiters are calling
If recruiter calls are starting to feel less like a nuisance and more like an opportunity, it could be a sign you're ready to move. Even if you’re not actively looking, staying connected with a recruiter can open doors to roles with more flexibility, better pay, or stronger alignment with your values.
If any of these signs sound familiar, it might be time for a fresh start. At Allen & York, we partner with organisations across the globe to help people take the next step in their careers.
