How to Spot AI in Job Applications

AI is reshaping recruitment there’s no doubt about it. While it can be a useful tool for candidates, it’s creating new challenges for hiring managers trying to assess authenticity and capability. At Allen & York, we’ve seen a noticeable rise in applications that show signs of AI support, particularly across sustainability, environmental, and health & safety roles where communication and personal motivation matter as much as technical skill.

So, how can you tell when a candidate’s submission might have been written by AI?

1. It sounds perfect… too perfect

AI-generated text is polished and grammatically flawless, but often lacks warmth or individuality. Look for overly formal phrasing, long sentences, and a corporate tone that doesn’t quite match the candidate’s level or background.

2. It’s full of buzzwords but light on substance

Phrases like “driving sustainable impact” or “committed to a greener future” are common but without concrete examples or measurable achievements, they may be filler rather than fact. Genuine candidates reference specific projects, sites, or technologies.

3. Everything feels formulaic

AI tools tend to produce applications with neat three-paragraph cover letters and repeated structures (“I am…”, “I believe…”). If multiple applications read similarly, it’s a clue that they may have come from the same chatbot prompt.

4. The tone doesn’t match the CV

A polished cover letter paired with a less consistent CV can indicate AI involvement. Most people write in a similar style across documents, whereas AI can produce something that feels disconnected from the candidate’s true communication style.

5. Vague or inaccurate technical details

AI can struggle with context. You might see a candidate listing niche sustainability or EHS expertise but providing incorrect or generic examples of how they’ve applied it. Probing deeper at interview stage often exposes gaps quickly.

Authenticity Matters

AI can help candidates present themselves more effectively and whilst that’s not necessarily a bad thing, in people-driven sectors like sustainability, environment and health & safety, cultural fit, motivation, and genuine expertise can’t be automated.

At Allen & York, we combine human insight with technology to help our clients distinguish between polished profiles and true potential – ensuring the people you hire are as genuine as their passion for a better future.
