We have a fantastic opportunity for a Director of Sustainability to develop, implement, monitor, and communicate our sustainability strategies to improve the environmental performance of our business, and promote sustainable development.

This is a newly created position that will have jurisdiction for sustainability across our entire business. You'll work effectively and in collaboration with key stakeholders and colleagues across both The Gleneagles Hotel in Auchterarder and Gleneagles Townhouse in Edinburgh, optimising our delivery model and leading on relevant and associated projects.

The key areas of focus will include Policy and Management, Energy, Water, Waste, Air, Food Safety and Environmental Health, Purchasing & supply chains, Hazardous Materials, Refurbishment and Landscaping.

Role Details

  • You’ll be spending time in the operation, getting up to speed with the inner workings of our business, exploring where the greatest opportunities lie, becoming conversant in our ways of working to ensure your strategies and recommendations have relevance and credence across all areas of the business

  • Creating an integrated and ambitious sustainability strategy for Gleneagles before socialising and seeking buy-in from the senior team

  • Ensuring the provision of quality, focused management information and reporting on various aspects of sustainability performance, you’ll be ensuring robust tracking and reporting of progress against our environmental and sustainability targets is maintained.

  • Overseeing and managing the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of internal governance processes, ensuring there is clear ownership of all sustainable contractual commitments, with defined roles and responsibilities and clear communication of action plans and timelines

  • Ensuring all mandatory and voluntary environmental compliance and environmental sustainability reporting obligations are fulfilled, you’ll be taking a data led approach to measuring and reporting our progress

  • With responsibility for all contracted Environmental Management & Sustainability services, you’ll ensure they are delivered to exceptional standards

  • Forming and maintaining direct, effective relationships with sustainability, carbon, and energy stakeholders; you’ll be distinguishing what success looks like and communicating our ambitions to our leadership team so that they’re well understood and committed to

  • Liaising with our supply chain, you’ll influence how and what they deliver in relation to our sustainability agenda

  • Leading departmental forums, you’ll be advising, guiding, and helping our teams evolve their local sustainability strategies, targets, and programmes

  • Promoting and raising awareness of sustainability, at all levels of our business, you’ll make sure our people are conversant in our sustainable practices and are strong custodians of their new working practices

  • You’ll be working alongside our Brand and Internal Comms teams to communicate, both internally and externally, our commitments and progress while also ensuring our corporate clients are able to satisfy their own environmental obligations whilst also seeking accreditations and awards that reflect the impact of our sustainability strategies

  • Supporting local outreach projects where there’s room for us to help, support or combine sustainability efforts that have a lasting local impact

  • Providing sustainability & carbon strategy insight to support the development, approval, and delivery of Plan Zero projects

  • Interacting with our guests, always warm, professional, helpful and doing everything you can to exceed their expectations; playing your part in making their stay with us luxurious in every way

Who we're looking for

  • Ideally you have a degree or diploma in an environmentally related subject and have extensive experience of delivering environmental/sustainability service and/or programmes in a corporate environment

  • You have experience in sustainability, energy, and carbon reduction strategies with responsibility for supporting net zero decarbonisation and operational sustainability plans

  • You possess the ability to think critically and creatively, with experience of EU ETS, CRC EES and/or CHPQA; knowledge in relevant legislative compliance requirements and Health and safety awareness is essential

  • A 'big-picture' strategic thinker, you're also a practical applicator with great attention to detail and a methodical approach to work

  • You have exceptional customer relationship management skills, and a demonstrable ability to build relationships, inspire and engage effectively at all levels

  • With strong project management experience and leadership and management skills, you can influence and affect behavioural change across a business and at scale

  • Conversant and up to date in environmental, energy and carbon compliance, you have a strong understanding of the following mandatory and voluntary reporting requirements:

    • ESOS, SECR and other carbon reporting

    • CDP, RE100, EP100 & EV100

    • EPBD – MEES / EPC / DEC / TM44

  • Possessing excellent report writing skills, you have a proven ability to analyse, interpret and present environmental data in insightful ways; you're also able to evaluate the performance and cost-effectiveness of environmental sustainability technologies

  • You have well-honed commercial acumen and business development skills / awareness, you're able to create opportunities that offer both sustainable and commercially viable solutions

  • Self-motivated and results oriented you possess drive and initiative with the ability to work on your own initiative, as well as collaborate with others

  • Highly motivated and possessing an immense sense of pride in your work; you're passionate about delivering the high standards for our guests in line with the Gleneagles brand
