Job description
Principal Infrastructure Engineer
Location: Wigan - Hybrid
Contract: Permanent, full-time
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
An established UK engineering consultancy working in land development and infrastructure is looking to appoint a Principal Infrastructure Engineer to support continued growth. This is a senior technical and delivery role with responsibility for leading infrastructure design on a range of development-led projects.
You will take ownership of multiple schemes, managing design delivery from concept through to technical approval. The role combines hands-on technical work with leadership, requiring someone who can set engineering strategies, oversee outputs, and keep projects moving to programme and budget. You will act as a key point of contact for clients, local authorities, and approval bodies, particularly in relation to adoptable works.
The position involves leading highway and drainage design, negotiating approvals for S104, S38 and S278 works, and ensuring all designs comply with current standards, codes of practice, and health and safety legislation. You will work closely with internal design teams and provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers.
Applicants should have strong experience in highway design, ground modelling, drainage and hydraulic modelling including SuDS, and external works and levels design, including Part M compliance. You should be comfortable working within UK industry standards and approval processes. Proficiency in AutoCAD is essential, alongside experience with PDS or XPSite3D or similar, MicroDrainage, WinDes or equivalent hydraulic software, and standard Microsoft packages.
The role is suited to someone with typically five to ten years' experience in a UK consultancy environment, educated to degree or HNC level in civil engineering or a related discipline. You may already be operating at Principal level or be a Senior Engineer ready to step up with the right level of autonomy.
The employer offers a competitive salary, a contributory pension scheme, flexible benefits including the option to buy additional holiday and access healthcare support, and structured training and career development. Flexible working arrangements are available to support work-life balance.
The business is committed to building an inclusive and supportive workplace and welcomes applications from candidates of all backgrounds. Reasonable adjustments are supported throughout both recruitment and employment.
