Project Engineer

What they offer you......
Our client is proud of its diverse workforce and supports a healthy work-life balance. They offer private healthcare, discounted green travel, 25 days holiday with options to buy/sell 5 days per annum, enhanced family leave and 4 volunteering days.
Reporting to a Project Manager in the UK&I wind development team, you will produce engineering, planning and property drawings through the development, consenting and construction stages of wind farm projects.

Job Purpose/Summary Details

As the Project Engineer you will lead on and deliver infrastructure designs for Irish wind farm projects (and other UK projects from time to time). You will have design responsibility for several projects that may be in different stages of their life cycle (early feasibility through to construction).

Organisational Context

Your role is key to ensure schemes submitted for Planning Approval are buildable and profitable and to bringing consented schemes to construction and sale.
You will work closely with project team leaders for each distinct phase of a project. This is the Development Project Manager at pre-consent stage, the Project Manager for the post consent stage and the Construction Manager during construction.
We have a number of project engineers who will work alongside you. The Lead Project Engineer has overall responsibility for ensuring best practice is followed and will liaise with you on this. They will also contribute to your development and training plan to ensure this promotes and facilitates your ability to perform and grow within the role.

Key Accountabilities

Your overall responsibility is to provide engineering expertise and produce engineering feasibility assessments and designs for wind farm civil and electrical infrastructure. There is a strong civil engineering bias to the work required but you will also need to have or develop an understanding of the electrical and certain grid aspects so you can oversee the interfaces between these elements of the overall design.
It is essential that wind farms are viable on a subsidy free basis so an important aspect of your role will be to improve the value of projects to our customers and to reduce costs. You will achieve this through efficient working, careful scoping & procurement, support to cost reduction initiatives & programmes, adoption & development of processes that reduce waste, creative problem solving and teamwork.

You will:

  • Help to identify project risks and how these can be mitigated cost effectively.
  • Address engineering problems, weigh up conflicting project requirements and recommend solutions. There is a wealth of internal expertise across a variety of disciplines for you to draw on, or external contractors, for specialist advice.
  • Oversee the internal and external resources needed to carry out project engineering work. Ensure work meets the health, safety, quality, cost and programme requirements of projects. Apply design risk assessment processes and reduce risk by design.
  • Follow industry best practice, standards and codes and to keep your knowledge of these up to date with continuous professional development.
  • Visit project sites and do site walkovers to gain information. Procure surveys and geotechnical and electrical site investigation works with support from specialists.
  • Fulfil the role of Principal Designer point of contact under the Construction Design Management Regulations 2015 (once appropriately trained and experienced).
  • Develop infrastructure design budgets and programmes to inform overall project plans.
  • Prepare civil works specifications for inclusion in contracts.
  • Provide support to the construction team to address issues as they arise and assist in ensuring all elements are built in accordance with the design.

Your knowledge

  • CDM Regulations
  • Design Manual for Roads and Bridges
  • Geotechnical and structural design principles
  • Terrestrial and airborne surveying techniques
  • Consultancy agreements and contracts
  • Onshore Wind Development, Construction and Generation processes including project timescales, costs and associated impacts.

Knowledge of civil engineering as it relates to onshore wind farm design in the UK is highly desirable for the role.

Your skills:

  • an attention to detail
  • good report writing ability
  • good team working
  • negotiation skills
  • basic commercial awareness particularly in relation to impact on engineering design

Experience & Qualifications:

You need to be a degree qualified engineer in a related engineering discipline or someone with equivalent experience.
You will have engineering experience of infrastructure projects and in the management and co-ordination of design processes. Experience of managing workloads and meeting demanding timescales is key. Highways experience is highly desirable as well as experience in mitigation of risks through design.
