Environmental Officer

Job description

Environmental Officer

Location: Lerwick, Kirkwall, Stirling, or Barcaldine (with travel across Scotland)

Company: Scottish Sea Farms
Business Area: Sustainability & Development
Reports to: Head of Sustainability & Development

About the Role:
Scottish Sea Farms is seeking a dedicated and dynamic Environmental Officer to join their Sustainability & Development team. This role is pivotal in ensuring regulatory compliance and driving forward their sustainability goals as they expand their marine farming operations. The successful candidate will engage in a wide range of environmental tasks, from hands-on survey work to regulatory compliance and sustainability reporting, contributing to their mission of sustainable aquaculture growth.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Survey Work: Plan, participate in, and conduct environmental surveys (e.g., benthic, epifaunal, bathymetry) to support compliance and development initiatives. This includes liaising with regulators and overseeing third-party contractors.
  • Development Support: Collaborate with production and fish health teams to assess environmental conditions, analyse modelling outputs, and identify new site opportunities. Prepare technical reports and assist with ADCP and wave buoy deployments.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Support compliance by managing site leases, licenses, and permissions. Oversee the timely submission of statutory reports and data returns required by SEPA, Marine Directorate, and other regulatory bodies.
  • Sustainability Initiatives: Collect and analyse sustainability data, help compile net-zero action plans, and work with industry partners to foster biodiversity. Stay updated on relevant regulations and industry standards.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Degree in Environmental Science, Planning, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and with external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and report writing, with attention to regulatory and environmental compliance.
  • Enthusiastic about fieldwork, with flexibility for travel and outdoor work at sea.
  • Experience in environmental monitoring or aquaculture (advantageous). Basic understanding of aquaculture regulations is beneficial, though full training will be provided.

Why Join them?
At Scottish Sea Farms, you'll be part of a forward-thinking team committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship in aquaculture.
